New Trains, Signalling, Rail and Power Supplies
The new 'S Class' trains are now in use.It is possible to walk through the train and the central corridor is wide enough to allow wheel chair access. The trains have air-conditioning and CCTV, and are able to run faster than the old trains but have 30% fewer seats than the old trains. They will not be able to run at their full speed until the new signalling is completed. London Underground is introducing the new trains on all their subsurface lines (Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City, Circle and District) without any allowance for the generally greater distances travelled by Met line users.
Work to install new signalling, rails and power supplies has been underway for some time but is now expected to complete in 2018 rather than 2014 following the demise of Metronet. London Underground is now reponsible for maintenance of the line. The program to improve all stations has been deferred until further notice and it is not known when stations such as Moor Park will have improvements to the PA systems and CCTV similar to those made at Northwood.
The work is being carried out at week-ends and holiday periods. People intending to travel during these times should check before travelling on the Transport for London website or via relevant CEEFAX or Teletext TV pages.
